In this class, we will see how wonderfully God created the earth, learn more about what He created and observe how it behaves. Class time will be devoted to experiments while introducing and discussing new topics. Homework will include reading assignments, question/answer pages and optional at-home experiments.  Approximately one-third of the course will focus on Geology, two-thirds will focus on Chemistry.

HS American History

American History 1

Benny Phillips (lesson plan and lectures prepared in part by Jacob Phillips)

Benny Phillips earned his Bachelor of Arts in History from George Mason University in 1977.  He has pastored several churches in the Washington D.C. and Orlando areas, and is currently the senior pastor at Redeemer Church of Lake Nona.  He has been an active member of the homeschooling community for over 30 years, and homeschooled all 7 of his children.  He served as the principal of The Regent Academy from 2004-2011.

Jacob Phillips earned his Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Central Florida in 2011.  He is attending law school at the University of Florida.

History is not about facts.  History is not about dates.  History is not dry and boring.  In this course, you won’t have to remember when Columbus sailed the ocean blue (because, honestly, would it change one thing about our current culture if it was actually 1493?) and you won’t need to remember how tall George Washington was or whether John Quincy Adams was the fourth or fifth president and so on and so forth.  What you will learn is the significance of events.  You will learn why you should care about history.  You will learn how the Missouri Compromise fundamentally impacts your life today.  You will learn how the fate of the United States was determined in no small way by the arrogance of an insignificant American general.  You may not know how many people died at the Battle of Manasses (or Bull Run, if you prefer), but you will know why the least important part about that battle may have been who ended up actually winning.  Tests are not multiple choice or true or false, they are essay and short answer format.  After all, it doesn’t matter if you know whether Gettysburg started on July 1st or 2nd.  What matters is that you can engage in the historical discussion about the issues that have shaped our ethnic and cultural foundation.  Historical events happened.  But can you tell us why? Can you tell us what happened next? Can you tell us why it’s important? Can you tell us how it impacts who we are as a people today? That’s what this class will teach you to do, from when Columbus sailed the ocean blue to when Lee surrendered to Grant.  (Which, if you really must know, is 1492-1865.)

Note: In the spring, American History II will cover from “Sic semper tyrannis!” to “Let’s Roll!” (Again, for those to whom dates are important, 1865 to 2001.)

Roots and Wings

A Hands-on Study of Plants and Winged Animals!

Join us for a fascinating adventure through God’s wonderful world, using award-winning materials to delight and inspire your elementary-age student! Throughout this study, students will become true scientists as they learn about the fascinating world that God has created.

Class time will be devoted to experiments, activities, and introduction of topics. Homework will include reading, notebooking, and varied reinforcing activities.

During the first half of the year we will explore the plants of the earth, growing some of our own. Students will study the nature of botany, the process of classifying plants, and delve into the diverse processes and systems found in a wide variety of plant life. Students will also take turns caring for and feeding our very own carnivorous bug-eating plants!

During the second half of the year our study will take flight as we discover many of the winged creatures that make their homes in the vegetative habitats we learned about previously. Students will study birds, bats and insects, opening their eyes to the many different species that live in our midst. To conclude our year-long adventure into God’s wonderful world, students will participate in growing their own butterflies from larva, through metamorphosis, and finally adult release!
